MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 2 November 2016 – IMRIS, Deerfield Imaging, the global leader in intraoperative imaging, announced that Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, flagship of Miami Children’s Health System, has recently acquired the IMRIS Surgical Theatre, an intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) system to support its renowned Brain Institute. The hospital is the first pediatric facility in Florida to acquire this leading-edge equipment, which brings MRI technology directly into the surgical suite to enhance safety and ensure complete removal of tumors and preservation of healthy tissue.

The IMRIS Surgical Theatre includes a ceiling-mounted rack system that brings the MR directly to the patient in the surgical suite. The high-resolution magnetic resonance images provide surgeons with real-time views of the affected area without moving the patient. The surgeon is able to determine if the targeted area is thoroughly treated or if surgical plans need to be adjusted before completing the procedure. The iMRI is housed in a separate imaging suite that can be used for diagnostic MRI procedures outside of the operating room.

“The Intraoperative MRI supports our neurosurgical team in maximizing resection of abnormal tissue in the safest manner possible,” said Dr. John Ragheb, Director of the Division of Neurosurgery at Nicklaus Children’s. “Studies demonstrate that use of an intraoperative MRI improves safety and the effectiveness of surgery, therefore giving the best possible neurosurgical results in the hands of an experienced surgical team.”

“The IMRIS Surgical Theatre provides the most advanced imaging for Nicklaus Children’s surgeons during operations,” said Andrew Flanagan, Deerfield Imaging’s President and CEO. “Hospitals are recognizing the advantage of enhanced visualization in the operating room and reduced risks by not moving patients during surgery and avoiding re-operation.”

The Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Nicklaus Children’s is the most-experienced neurosurgical service in Florida and one of the most recognized in the nation. The IMRIS Surgical Theatre is housed in a new state-of-the-art surgical suite within the hospital’s Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion, a new six-story critical care tower on the Nicklaus Children’s campus, which recently opened in October 2016.
