Three times each year, in October, February and July, UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Children's Hospital hosts a New Graduate Training Program that is designed to provide the graduating nursing student with information and skills essential to making a smooth transition from student nurse to Registered Nurse. Start your career at the top with our formal New Grad training program, designed to ease the transition from student to practicing professional. Through lectures, on-line learning, discussion, demonstration, skill laboratories, and clinical experience, the new grad is provided with opportunities in enhance clinical and critical thinking skills as it applies to the Registered Nurse scope of practice and the nurses' role at UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Children's Hospital. In conjunction with the didactic experience the program offers a 1:1 unit-based orientation with a preceptor trained to guide the new graduate nurse through the transition.

Training Programs Descriptions

Adult Acute Care Training Program - This program is for new graduate nurses and RNs with less than six months experience in the acute care setting who are interested in working on the acute medical-surgical patient care units. This is a wonderful opportunity to develop your expertise in any of the following specialties:

* Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery - 10 Long is a 36-bed telemetry unit with both surgery and medical patients. Surgical procedures include heart and lung transplants, valve replacement, vascular reconstruction and CABG. Cardiology patients include MI, CHF and cardiomyopathy. This is a fast-paced, high acuity unit with many opportunities for learning.

* Neurosurgery/Neurology - 8 Long houses our neuro patient population and includes complex neuro spine surgeries in addition to brain surgeries. You will have the opportunity to learn neuro telemetry for our seizure patient population and to work with many rare neurological diseases. UCSF is a major neuroscience referral center and is a Center for Excellence in Neuro.
