During his tenure, the clinic's physician-scientist staff doubled from 1,800 to 3,400; total visits increased from 2.8 million to 7.1 million; and research funding grew from $121 million to $260 million.

In addition, significant construction on the campus included addition of the Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute, the Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute, the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center, and the Tomsich Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Institute.

Present construction includes a health education campus in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University.

Other highlights of his leadership include the 2015 opening of the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, as well as the 10-year-old Cleveland Clinic Toronto. In addition, Cleveland Clinic London is scheduled to open its doors to patients in 2020.

The clinic also opened a new hospital in Avon, Ohio.

Cosgrove also pioneered “same-day” medical appointments, which allowed access to same-day appointments for patients in 2016.

At the annual “State of the Clinic” address in February, Cosgrove reflected back on 2016.

Calling the nation's present health care challenges “unprecedented in their size, speed and scope,” he noted that Cleveland Clinic had a “very successful year” in 2016.
