mammography system
Hologic Inc. announced today that its 3Dimensions mammography system is commercially available in Europe.

This new tomosynthesis system is equipped with features that generate higher-quality images and help manage dose.

"We expect that the European market will be extremely interested in the 3Dimensions mammography system because it was designed to address key areas, including accuracy, clarity, workflow and dose, that we know are of interest to European radiologists," Jan Verstreken, Hologic's regional president for EMEA and Canada, told HCB News.

Its Clarity HD high-resolution 3-D technology can help find cancers at an early stage because it allows the radiologists to see subtle lesions and fine calcifications. The technology's detector and imaging algorithm work together to deliver clear imaging regardless of breast size or density.

According to studies published in Radiology, Lancet Oncology, and JAMA Oncology, Clarity HD reduces recall rates by up to 40 percent, compared to 2-D mammography alone.

The system's Intelligent 2-D imaging technology works in conjunction with Clarity HD to improve clarity, contrast and detail while lowering dose. It also enables the radiologist to instantly move from suspicious areas detected on the 2-D image to the point of interest on the 3-D slice.

It also features the new SmartCurve breast stabilization system, which makes the exam more comfortable for the patient. A Hologic survey found it improved comfort for 93 percent of women who reported moderate to severe discomfort with standard compression.

It has a curved compression surface that mirrors the shape of a woman's breast. That lessens pinching and enables uniform compression over the entire breast.

The Quantra 2.2 breast density assessment software is also available on the 3Dimensions system. It standardizes patient protocols so hospitals can achieve reproducible and consistent breast density assessment.

"We have begun installing 3Dimensions systems in Europe, and both interest and orders have already exceeded our expectations," said Verstreken. "Further information on the U.S. availability of the [system] will be shared in the near future."
