Discussing top-of-mind issues facing biomedical professionals with Codi Nelson

From the November 2017 issue of DOTmed HealthCare Business News magazine
In August, the North Carolina Biomedical Association (NCBA) held its 39th annual symposium in Pinehurst, NC. HealthCare Business News checked in with Codi Nelson, the president of the association and a BMET III with Crothall Healthcare to learn more about the event and the issues that are currently impacting the biomedical community.

HCB News: What is the purpose of the NCBA symposium and who typically attends it?

Codi Nelson: This year was our 39th Annual Symposium held at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, NC. Our association’s moto is “Enhancing Biomedical Professionals Since 1978,” and this encompasses a number of different experiences for our attendees. At this year’s symposium, we offered 35 training opportunities, including 15 manufacturer-certified courses. We had 78 various vendors in our trade show hall, and we offered plenty of opportunities while classes were not in session for networking. These included golf, the TechNation Tour Party, poolside reception, and free time to have dinner with vendors. I would like to thank all of the employers of our board members, and specifically Crothall Healthcare for their support. Without them, our board of volunteers wouldn’t be able to make these events possible.

HCB News: What stood out to you about this year's event?

CN: In the past we have held a golf tournament every year. However, this year, we held our 1st Annual “Mike McCoy” Golf Tournament on Pinehurst Course 3. This event was established in the honor of Mike McCoy who was a past member and heavy contributor to the NCBA. In addition, every year, we offer $9,000 in scholarships to our membership and award one shop the honor of the “Kevin Scoggin” Shop of the Year. Two scholarships of $2,000 are awarded to current students who are just coming into this field, and our $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a current HTM/BMET who is working toward a higher-level degree. This year, our scholarship winners were Erica Douglas from UNC Chapel Hill, and Nathan Minton from Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute. The “Kevin Scoggin” Shop of the Year Award was presented to the Clinical Equipment Management Program at Novant Presbyterian Medical Center. Once again I want to say congratulations to all of our winners.

HCB News: What are the top-of-mind issues facing biomedical professionals today?

CN: All HTMs face two major challenges today: cybersecurity and the ever-evolving regulation of the healthcare industry. The NCBA helps tackle these issues by providing top-notch education from the industry’s leading professionals. Every year, during our planning, we discuss current issues and address how we can educate our membership on these issues. This past year, we had a few classes that focused on the topics that were previously mentioned: “Cybersecurity and HTM”, “NCBA Roundtable: Focus on Equipment Maintenance Documentation and Current HTM Challenges”, and “Operationalizing Regulatory Requirements.” All of these courses were highly attended and had great reviews.
