“You get a six- to seven-parameter vital signs monitor at a very low cost,” Bilgutay said. “Everyone wants the CO2 measurement feature, but people are hard-pressed to buy it because it’s actually a very expensive technology. We found a way to get the cost down and include it in the monitor as a standard feature.”

Also this year, the company began making its portable CLEO vital signs/CO2 monitor 100 percent in the U.S., which Bilgutay said is rare for patient monitors.

“By doing that, it’s highly configurable,” Bilgutay said.

This year, the company also introduced a rolling cart for the CLEO and made some adjustments to the software for the CO2 monitoring.

Medtronic
In May 2017, Medtronic released the next generation of its Vital Sync Virtual Patient Monitoring Platform and Clinical Decision Support Solution to the market.
Medtronic's Vital Sync Virtual Patient Monitoring Platform 2.6.

While the platform had traditionally focused on remote patient surveillance of patients, the Vital Sync system now offers a clinical decision support software solution. It combines remote surveillance with a mobile clinical decision support tool set to help clinicians implement care protocols and predict or prevent adverse events from happening on both the medical/surgical floors and in the ICU.

“Nurses and clinicians have a lot of work to do: documentation, responding to alerts and alarms, all while providing the best in patient care,” said Julia Strandberg, vice president and general manager for Health Informatics and Monitoring business at Medtronic. "Our system helps simplify the time a clinician would spend on these tasks so they can spend more time with their patients."

The Vital Sync system gathers patient data continuously and directly from a variety of bedside monitors and aggregates the information, running an analytics tool that provides clinicians with smart, actionable information in a simple way, so they can deliver the right patient care at the right time, Strandberg said.

“It could be a score that helps notify a respiratory therapist when a patient on a ventilator is ready to be weaned,” Strandberg said.

Patients who seem healthy but may have risk factors due to surgery and narcotic administration could be connected to the Vital Sync system, to automatically calculate early warning scores to give early insight into issues that might arise, such as respiratory compromise.
