Avoiding adverse events while navigating through the constant beeps and alarms in the ICU and on the medical surgical floor, or during patient transport, is a huge challenge for hospital clinicians.

Patient monitor manufacturers are responding to these challenges by releasing products that aid caregivers with clinical decision support and products that provide continuous monitoring, all while minimizing insignificant alarms and integrating with hospital EMR systems.

Here’s what’s new in the past year from several of the top patient monitor manufacturers.

GE Healthcare
GE Healthcare is planning to launch a new product called Carescape Connect, a gateway that allows for the ability to take data collected at a patient's bedside and make it available in a seamless way to different players in the ecosystem – secondary alarm providers, mobile visualization providers, EMRs and hospital databases – which helps to avoid false positive alarms, said Ajay Parkhe, general manager of monitoring solutions for GE Healthcare.

This is part of an overall trend of inter-device interoperability to allow better patient outcomes and reduction of adverse events.

GE is also working through FDA approval for a Carescape portfolio of monitors tailored for the NICU and the cardiac space. It will use early prediction and workflow optimization in both of these specialized areas of the hospital.

“Different care areas require different parameters,” Parkhe said, using the example of transcutaneous CO2 monitoring and aEEG for premature babies.

The company released two new products in the last year. The first is the QRS12, a 12-lead echocardiograph which was released in January. The waterproof device has a 9-inch touch screen with an alphanumeric keyboard, designed for a fast-paced environment. It supports various file formats and is HL7 and DICOM compliant.

Also, in 2018, the company released a new version of the OMNI Express portable vital signs monitor. It monitors heart rate, SpO2, blood pressure, temperature and CO2.

Suleyman Bilgutay, managing partner at Infinium Medical, said the device, designed with the outpatient surgery market in mind, is available for half the price of similar models, which can cost up to $4,000.
