GE HealthCare has scored FDA clearance for its CARESCAPE Canvas patient monitoring platform, designed to make hospital environments more adaptable to changes in patient acuity and disease by scaling services depending on the individual needs of each patient.

The single, standardized platform is a FlexAcuity solution, meaning that it can provide ICU-level monitoring in lower acuity settings, and uses smart parameter technology to assess all levels of acuity, creating an enterprise system that connects micromodules to standardized medical USB technology by adding or disconnecting cables for various care configurations to address different needs.

"Monitoring technologies requiring different connections and ports for each new patient vital sign create confusion and possibly prevent institutions from leveraging new clinical capabilities easily. Standardized medical USB connections and flexible software on GE HealthCare’s vital sign monitoring devices allow them to be used at the bedside to deliver the accuracy healthcare teams need to help make proactive clinical decisions," Neal Sandy, general manager for monitoring solutions at GE HealthCare, told HCB News.

The CARESCAPE Canvas bedside monitor has been tested on current and prior versions of GE HealthCare solutions, many of which are still used to monitor 100 million patients annually, meaning that healthcare systems can upgrade solutions when they can, and not have to worry about incompatibility.

"This may decrease total cost of ownership while empowering healthcare systems to stay up-to-date on the latest technology," said Sandy.

Additionally, packaging volume is 53% less with this than the previous generation scanner, as is packaging weight by 48%, and energy consumption by 25%. The monitors are designed at GE HealthCare’s Helsinki site, and approved for use in EU countries, as of June 2022.

In the past year, GE HealthCare has built up the scale of its patient monitoring technologies. Last June, the company completely integrated the entire suite of Medtronic’s continuous monitoring solutions onto its CARESCAPE patient monitoring platform, which includes Microstream capnography (CO2) to alert clinicians to when a patient is declining, and INVOS regional oximetry (rSO2) technology for monitoring hemodynamic changes.

That same month, it unveiled Portrait Mobile, a continuous monitoring system that alerts clinicians to early signs of patient deterioration, reducing adverse events and improving outcomes, while eliminating the need for manual spot checks that often miss many vital sign changes, including in respiratory rate, which is the highest-ranked variable in models that predict clinical deterioration in hospitals.
