We have worked with lead, steel, concrete and composite shielding (Leadite many years ago). We still see lead and concrete as the prevalent shielding, but there are some adopters of composite shielding when space is limited.
HCB News: What are some of the things you're most looking forward to at the annual ASTRO meeting in San Antonio?
FH: My favorite part of ASTRO is seeing the people that work in this industry and catching up with them. Again - it’s about the relationships. Secondly - is learning what’s new in the market from the OEM’s if anything. In San Antonio - the Riverwalk and the food is excellent and I always look forward to coming here.

HCB News: Without having to name names, can you tell us about one of H&H Design-Build's most memorable construction jobs?
FH:Our most memorable construction project(s) would be a tie for me. Both are at leading Universities in the Midwest. We worked with an OEM to develop a research facility to house a 7T MRI system, 3T MRI system and PET/CT system. The location of the project was near an active railroad which would cause extreme problems for the 7T MRI. We worked closely with a company that helped developed an ‘air-bag’ system allowing us to ‘float’ the 7T MRI room. We built a catacomb system below the MRI room to allow for the installation and maintenance of the air-bag system. It worked absolutely perfectly!
The other project challenged us with installing a (2) Cyclotron Vaults below grade and in between an MRI research facility and the molecular imaging/radiology department of the other. The upper floor included a PET/CT and space for a 3T MRI system. We worked directly for the University who initially wasn’t a fan of Design-Build but decided for this project they wanted a team that had the experience to deliver and within an aggressive timeline.
