GE HealthCare adds AI-driven tools to radiation oncology portfolio

GE HealthCare plans to broaden its radiation oncology offerings with new AI-enabled solutions, including the MR Contour DL model and an expanded software suite.

The Chicago-based company introduced MR Contour DL, which recently received FDA clearance. The tool uses deep learning to assist in radiation therapy planning by automating segmentation of organs at risk (OAR) in head-neck and pelvic regions. According to GE HealthCare, the model is designed to streamline workflows by generating organ contours from MR images—a task typically handled manually—potentially reducing planning time and improving consistency.

GE HealthCare also plans to integrate software from Spectronic Medical AB, based in Helsingborg, Sweden, into its portfolio. Spectronic’s MR Planner software, already FDA-cleared and CE-marked, uses AI to convert standard MR images into synthetic CT images, supporting MR-only radiotherapy workflows. The acquisition is expected to bolster GE HealthCare’s efforts to advance MR-based treatment planning.

“Spectronic Medical was founded on the vision that advanced MR and AI technologies can unlock entirely new possibilities in radiotherapy,” said Dr. Carl Siversson, CEO of Spectronic Medical.

The updated Intelligent Radiation Therapy (iRT) platform was also highlighted at ESTRO. The revised software now supports MR-guided workflows and third-party AI applications, aiming to simplify complex processes and shorten the timeline from diagnosis to treatment.

“GE HealthCare is at the forefront of the battle against cancer,” said Dr. Ben Newton, general manager of oncology at GE HealthCare. “The expansion of our radiation oncology portfolio as well as the new AI-enabled innovations highlighted at ESTRO this year are a testament to the investments and efforts we are making.”
