I am Akane Naka from Japan,
returning to DOTmed team.
Hi again. I guess many of you had a three-day weekend due to Columbus Day. I hope everyone enjoyed your weekend.

In this week, let me talk about vitamins and minerals that are contained in cereals since I read an interesting issue. The issue focused on organic cereals compared to commercial ones such as Kellogg's products.

The question in the article was "Are organic cereals really better for kids?" As you might have taken a look at nutrition facts on cereals boxes, every time I buy a box of cereal, I choose one which is high on vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Commercial companies add vitamins to their cereals during the manufacturing process, however, the main appeal of organic cereals is that their cereals are made with only natural ingredients. And it's said that a serving of organic cereal gives kids only 2 percent of the recommended daily intake for vitamin A and iron, according to the label. (Of course several organic cereals such as Barbara's Bakery organic line are made healthier by adding extra vitamins.)

Which one do you think better? Some people prefer to ingest their vitamins directly from fruits and vegetables; therefore they tend to pick organic ones that have no added vitamins.

I think it is easier for us to get high vitamins and minerals through cereals in this busy present life. It does not mean you should give your organic cereals up because they do not have enough vitamins. It's probably a good idea to give your child a multivitamin in other ways if you are particular about naturals products.

Check with pediatrician to be sure.
