Anesthesiologists launch ventilator design challenge to combat COVID-19 pandemic

by John R. Fischer, Senior Reporter | April 06, 2020

The shortage of ventilators has put hospitals worldwide in dire situations, with providers in Italy now forced to triage patients and the Trump administration telling hospitals in the U.S. to consider splitting a ventilator between two patients, known as co-venting, if there are no other options in a practice.

“The use of co-venting should only be considered if a hospital cannot provide clinically proven, reliable, and safe methods to manage acute respiratory failure, including manual bagging,” Surgeon General Jerome Adams and Assistant Secretary for Health Adm. Brett Giroir told healthcare workers in an open letter. “Co-venting should be performed for the briefest time required with rapid transition to 1:1 patient-ventilator support when additional ventilators become available.”
