The two centers have invested in cutting-edge medical technology and software for proton therapy – an advanced, high-precision form of radiation therapy which is gaining ground as a treatment method for certain types of tumors. Both centers aim to give patients access to the best possible cancer care locally, thereby eliminating the need to travel abroad for proton therapy. They selected RayStation for its flexibility, accuracy and its wide range of tools. The treatment planning system offers groundbreaking features such as machine learning, multi-criteria optimization, ultrafast computation speed and support for adaptive radiation therapy.

Quirónsalud Hospital Group performed the country’s first proton therapy treatments in December 2019 at its newly opened proton therapy center in Madrid. The facility is equipped with the Proteus®ONE* compact proton therapy system from IBA.

Clínica Universidad de Navarra began treating patients with proton therapy at its Madrid site in April 2020, creating the first proton therapy unit within a comprehensive cancer center in Spain. The facility is the first European installation of Hitachi’s complete proton therapy system PROBEAT.

Juan María Pérez Moreno, PhD, medical physicist at Quirónsalud Proton Therapy Center, says: “Quironsalud is a cutting-edge facility that brings the benefits of highly precise PBS proton plans created with RayStation. Flexibility and a wide range of tools make RayStation a key element of our center. As a very dynamic system under continuous development and improvement, it will help us deliver optimal patient care in the future.”

Felipe Calvo, director of the proton therapy unit at Clínica Universidad de Navarra, says: “Our facility enables patient treatments with higher precision. Combining RayStation with CT, MRI and PET scanning gives us outstanding accuracy both in targeting tumors and sparing healthy tissue.”

Johan Löf, founder and CEO, RaySearch, says: “The efforts of medical professionals, supported by advances in technology, are making cancer treatments safer, more effective, and more personalized. Proton therapy is a key technique for the future, and we are very pleased to support these two pioneering centers with the latest advances in proton treatment planning. Together we are bringing the benefits of highly precise treatment to more patients in the country.
