A call for sustainability through reprocessing

August 10, 2021
Business Affairs
From the August 2021 issue of HealthCare Business News magazine

The U.S. healthcare system’s reliance on “Take-Make-Waste” medical equipment can be startling when compared to the circularity of other industries. My experiences working with medical devices at end-of-life have shown me how even the smallest design changes can translate into sizeable benefits or obstacles when maintaining and reprocessing medical equipment. I look forward to entering the medical device workforce, where thinking about sustainability at the design stage, including eliminating those aspects that limit reprocessing, is second nature. Medical device reprocessing is a step forward in reducing the healthcare industry’s environment footprint and reducing costs.
