Northwell has partnered with Google Cloud to scale its digital infrastructure and create equal access to quality care.
Northwell Health is applying Google Cloud and AI to bolster its digital operations to make care better and access more equitable.

The New York healthcare system will adopt Google Cloud as its preferred platform for modernizing its infrastructure, and use the company’s AI and machine learning technology to improve digital scheduling, automate payer interactions, and summarize medical information. It also plans to use these applications for capacity planning, as well as to identify risk indicators of when early interventions are necessary.

"People want the same kind of seamless experiences and access to their healthcare that they have in other areas of their life, and healthcare providers need to meet these demands while also running the organization more efficiently," said Joe Miles, managing director of global healthcare and life sciences solutions for Google Cloud, in a statement.

With Google Cloud, Northwell will build an interoperability data platform with AI and machine learning capabilities that collects and uses information from different patient records for recommendations and decision support. The healthcare system will combine its security, privacy controls and processes with Google Cloud’s infrastructure to protect access to this data.

"This partnership will help us deliver personalized experiences by safely and privately harnessing customers' data to enhance care, well-being, and equity in care for our patients,” said Northwell Health CEO and president Michael Dowling.

Earlier this year, Northwell launched Ascertain, a platform for creating AI companies that develop solutions for increasing quality and access to care. It formed the platform in partnership with Aegis Ventures, a New York-based startup studio. Among the first companies that Ascertain has developed is one that is working with Northwell’s Center for Maternal Health to create new ways of detecting and managing serious complications in expectant mothers and their babies.

“We are all driven by the idea that everyone deserves access to high-quality, affordable healthcare,” said Dowling at the time. “Our aim is clear: to find new, cost-efficient ways to create and accelerate companies that deliver real, equitable solutions.”
