Dr. Selman has been active in organized neurosurgery, holding several leadership and editorial positions. Recently he served as President of the Society of Neurological Surgeons, the oldest professional society of neurosurgery throughout the world. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and served on the Board of Directors of the AANS, the Chair of the AANS Publications Committee, and was a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neurosurgery. He is a member and served as the Vice President of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons. He is a member and served as Vice President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). He is a member of the AANS/CNS Section on Cerebrovascular Surgery and served as Chairman of the Section. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and served as Chairman of the Board.

Prior to his entry into medicine, Dr. Selman attended the University of Toledo where he graduated summa cum laude. He then attended and graduated from Case Western University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. After his surgical internship, he conducted two years of research on focal cerebral ischemia at University Hospitals in Cleveland. Dr. Selman completed his neurosurgical residency training at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Cleveland. During his residency, he received specialty training in transsphenoidal surgery at the Mayo Clinic.
