Quantum Surgical has acquired NeuWave Medical Inc., bringing together two companies focused on technologies used in minimally invasive cancer treatment.

The Montpellier, France-based developer of robotic-assisted tumor ablation systems said the acquisition places both organizations under a newly created parent company, Precision IO Group Inc. The group will be led by medtech executive Kurt Azarbarzin, who has been appointed CEO.

Quantum Surgical develops the Epione robotic platform, which supports physicians performing percutaneous tumor ablation procedures. The system helps guide needle placement through the skin to target tumors, typically under CT imaging.

NeuWave Medical, based in Madison, Wisconsin, develops microwave ablation technology used during similar procedures. According to the companies, the system is used in more than 70% of the top cancer centers in the United States.

Quantum Surgical president and cofounder Bertin Nahum said the acquisition aligns with the company’s focus on expanding access to robotic-assisted tumor ablation. “At Quantum Surgical, we are committed to democratizing procedural know-how through robotics, and expanding high-quality cancer care for patients. Acquiring NeuWave Medical, Inc. is a natural and strategic step in that mission,” Nahum said.

NeuWave president Leah Kissling said the company plans to continue supporting physicians who use its technology. “We’re proud to join the Quantum Surgical team and continue supporting physicians in their mission to treat cancer patients,” Kissling said.

Precision IO Group said it aims to build a portfolio of technologies used in interventional radiology, with a focus on robotic systems, ablation devices and tools that could support remote procedures. The companies said they are exploring approaches that would allow specialists to assist with treatment planning and case review remotely using the Epione platform.

Despite the new structure, Quantum Surgical and NeuWave will continue to operate independently. The companies said this approach is intended to maintain continuity for physicians currently using their systems.

Epione is CE marked for abdominal, chest and musculoskeletal indications and has FDA clearance for abdominal tumor ablation. The company said more than 1,400 patients in Europe and the United States have been treated using the system.
