International Brain Mapping & Intraoperative Surgical Planning Society Names GE Healthcare "Pioneer in Technology"

WAUKESHA, WI -- The International Brain Mapping and Intraoperative Surgical Planning Society (IBMISPS) has recognized GE Healthcare with the Society's "Pioneer in Technology" award, rewarding GE's leading role in the development and commercialization of image-guided technologies in healthcare.

The IBMISPS Pioneer Award is presented to companies and individuals who lead the fight for scientific excellence in research, development and education. IBMISPS now honors GE Healthcare for its excellence and efforts to promote the highest standards in technology development and patient care.

"GE Healthcare's unique contributions to the science of imaging in general have been translated to clinically important advances in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with brain diseases," said Babak Kateb, Chairman of the Board, Founder and Executive Director, International Brain Mapping & Intraoperative Surgical Planning Society (IBMISPS).

IBMISPS is specifically dedicated to the advancement of intra-operative surgical planning and brain mapping for the treatment of brain and spinal cord injuries and diseases.

The award ceremony is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, August 28, 2008 at the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA, the site of the 5th Annual World Congress of the International Brain Mapping and Intraoperative Surgical Planning Society.

Dr. Ron von Jako, Chief Medical Officer and Surgical Development Leader at GE Healthcare Surgery is keynote speaker at the meeting. His talk is focused on the application of electromagnetic image guidance in spine surgery. There are more than 70 speakers at this year's meeting, including government officials from NINDS, NCI, NIBIB, TATRC, DOD, BVDIC and NASA. They'll cover topics such as the operating room of the future, electronic medical records, biophotonics, nanoneurosurgery, nanomedicine, gene and drug delivery, robotics, multimodality imaging, diffusion tensor imaging, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), stereotactic radiosurgery and deep brain stimulation (DBS) as well as healthcare policies related to the image guided therapy.
