An automated external defibrillator (AED) is the single most important device in saving the life of someone suffering a cardiac arrest. CPR will extend the time the heart functions without a response to shock, but only an AED will return the heartbeat to normal levels.
Less than 10% of those who suffer cardiac arrest outside of a hospital survive. For each minute that passes without defibrillation, the risk of death increases. After 12 minutes, the chance of survival is less than 5%.
Studies suggest that 1,500 Americans die each year after collapsing in health clubs. Considering AEDs can be successfully used by someone who has no training with the devices, it is quite perplexing that health clubs do not have them on hand. The explanation of course, comes down to cost and liability.

The fitness industry is concerned about lawsuits if a member dies after the device is used, officials say. However, the few lawsuits involving AEDs have all been against organizations that did not have them.
Gold's Gym International, the world's largest chain of coed gyms, has only "a few" defibrillators in its 650 locations, said Dave Reiseman, a company spokesman. Bally Total Fitness, with 420 clubs, has none.
