Health Care Reform Round-Up: Reid Says Consensus Reached on Public Option

by Astrid Fiano, DOTmed News Writer | December 09, 2009

Two amendments were rejected and then withdrawn on Sunday. One by Senator Blanch Lincoln (D-AR) would have limited the deductibility of insurance company executive compensation that exceeds the salary paid to the President of the United States, $400,000. Another by Senator John Ensign (R-NV) would have limited attorney contingency fees in medical liability lawsuits.

On Monday, a unanimous vote of 98 yeas enabled Mark Pryor's (D-AR) amendment to pass. This amendment would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to provide information regarding enrollee satisfaction with qualified health plans offered through an Exchange on the internet. According to Senator Pryor's website, the Department of Health and Human Services would gather and publish online consumer feedback about the health care plans offered through the proposed health care exchange. "These surveys will allow consumers and employers who participate in the Exchange to make informed decisions when selecting an insurance company, hold insurance companies accountable for their decisions, and provide Congress with an oversight tool to monitor the progress of the Exchange," he said.

Senator Judd Gregg's (D-NH) amendment to avoid new entitlements in Medicare was not successful. Gregg stated his amendment would have prevented Medicare money from being used to fund other parts of the health care bill. Gregg later stated that the Democratic senators were taking money away from seniors to pay for the bill. "This vote is yet another example of the misaligned priorities in the current health care reform debate, which will do irreparable harm to seniors, families, small businesses, and the long term fiscal solvency of this country," he said.
