Dr. Feig mentioned that while there may be false positives involved in mammography screening, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer outweigh the relatively low risk of unnecessary biopsy, and he likened early detection to a home smoke detector system.
"Do you want the smoke detector to go off when your house is half burned down, or do you want it to go off when you have a lot of smoke in your kitchen?"

Other highlights of the show included the IHE Image Sharing Demonstration, a collaborative course with the American Association of Family Physicians, and the Reading Room of the Future, which featured products integrating quantitative analysis into the image interpretation process. Plenary sessions and educational tracks were held on topics ranging from informatics and issues of radiation dose, health policy and research, and a full range of radiology sub-specialties, including breast imaging, neuroradiology, molecular imaging, radiation oncology, radiobiology, and vascular and interventional radiology.
