"When an academic leader comes before Congress to advocate a position, Congress should have confidence that he or she is independent and not being paid to assist the administration," Grassley said in his letter to Sebelius. Grassley was specifically referring to Professor Jonathan Gruber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who had participated in the Committee's Roundtable Discussion on Health Reform in May of 2009. Grassley says reports indicated Professor Gruber had received around $400,000 from HHS to evaluate various Congressional health care reform proposals.
