The President reflected on his own historic election and recounted his slogan, "Change you can believe in." In a frank self-assessment of the challenges of the job and roadblocks in Washington he admitted, "I never suggested that change would be easy or that I could do it alone."

In other health-related topics last night, the president praised the First Lady's work in fighting the epidemic of childhood obesity. In the context of ending the war in Iraq and bringing the troops home, the president endorsed building a 21st century VA. Regarding homeland security he suggested strengthening public health efforts such as fighting infectious disease.
He also acknowledged the nation's assistance in helping Haiti to recover and rebuild after this month's earthquake.
"We have finished a difficult year. We have come through a difficult decade but a new year has come. A new decade stretches before us. We don't quit. I don't quit. Let's seize this moment," he said.
