You can schedule
a blood donation online
The Red Cross has launched a new central Web site for its blood donation program. The site, redcrossblood.org, replaces their old regional Web sites and also replaces givelife.org.

Redcrossblood.org connects visitors with local blood donation drives according to zip code. You can even schedule a donation online or offer your services as a volunteer.

Site enhancements include a "share your story" feature where donors can blog about their experience. Social networking and free e-cards are also part of the improved functionality.

The new site should save Red Cross money through better efficiency.

"This site is an investment in our donors and volunteers," said Chris Hrouda, executive vice president, American Red Cross Biomedical Services. "We want the entire donation experience to be positive and this redesigned site is an important step in making that happen."

Recent snow storms have increased the need for blood donations as many donors have stayed home during inclement weather, the organization reports.

About the American Red Cross:

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation's blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization - not a government agency - and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit www.redcross.org or join our blog at http://blog.redcross.org. For information specifically on Blood Services, please visit redcrossblood.org.

Redcross.org is still their main website.
