Finally, Edward H. Shortliffe, M.D., Ph.D., President and CEO of the American Medical Informatics Association in Bethesda, MD, offered recommendations from an in-progress summary report from its Annual Health Policy Meeting last September. These recommendations include: creating a taxonomy to improve understanding of and developing consensus around terminology related to unintended consequences of HIT implementations; conducting research to improve the ability to identify, anticipate, and avoid/mitigate unintended consequences; and creating best practices for HIT design and implementation.
