technology trends
Des Plaines, Ill. - According to a recent study on interventional angiography labs in the U.S. published by IMV Medical Information Division, capital budgets in angio labs are increasing, as the labs are gearing up to purchase flat panel digital detectors to replace their image intensifier capability. Over one quarter of the sites surveyed indicated budgets of over $1 million for the year 2005, compared to 19% of the angio sites in 2001. At the same time, film budgets are declining, with only 38% of the sites budgeting for film in 2005, compared to 79% of the sites three years before.
"The use of digital technology to increase department efficiency is continuing to evolve," observed Lorna Young, Senior Director, Market Research. "Meanwhile, angio lab procedure volume has grown steadily as the procedure mix has broadened to include a variety of peripheral vascular and other non-coronary angiographic procedures. In 2004, four million procedures were performed in angio labs. Of these, non-coronary angio procedures totaled 2.86 million, comprising over two-thirds of the procedures performed in angio labs. And, from 1998 to 2004, the proportion of therapeutic applications, including angioplasties, vascular access, stent placements, thrombolytic therapy, IVC filter placements and embolization has increased from 38% of the non-coronary angio procedures to 45%. Concurrently, budgets for catheters, stents and related devices in angio labs have increased, with 30% of the angio sites having budgets of over $600,000 in 2004, compared to 15% of the sites in 2001."
The 2004/05 edition of the Interventional Angiography Lab Census Database profiles over 1,200 sites in the U.S., of the 1,630 identified hospitals with 150+ beds performing interventional angiography procedures, where at least 50% of the total lab volume are non-coronary angiography procedures. The database can be licensed by qualified subscribers and includes contact and site-specific information such as procedures performed, installed base and planned purchases of angio imaging equipment, angiography workstations and multi-modality networking, film budgets, contrast agent and catheter/stent budgets and utilization and power injectors. Applications of the database include market analysis, targeted direct marketing and lead generation.
