- RATU e-Health project, Northern Finland: 69 health care centers, 700,000 annual studies. The RATU is a pilot project for Finland aimed at integrating the medical imaging and information systems across five Finnish hospital districts Lappi, Lnsi-Pohja, Pohjois-Pohjanmaa, Keski-Pohjanmaa and Kainuu Countyand provide a vital step towards the development of a national Finnish central patient record archive. The new digital system will consist of a data centre-driven community Radiology Information System (RIS), archiving and web viewing for the whole region. Patient information will be centralized, improving information sharing and workflow with the goal of enhancing patient care. First phase of the project will connect all the northern region central hospitals and four pilot health care centers. The system has open architecture to allow all healthcare centers to join the initiative in a later phase. A key part of the project is the Lausuntotori e-portal, enabling inter-regional delivery and consultation of X-ray images over the Internet. The portal will allow clinicians to carry out consultations over the Internet and provide a secure forum for specialists in the region to view and consult patient images, irrespective of their location.

- Tuscany South East RIS/PACS Project, Italy: four regional hospitals, 18 sites, 936,000 annual studies. Initiated by the Regional Health Authority, the Tuscany South East RIS/PACS project includes four regional hospitals with 18 sites across South East Tuscany. Geographically the project includes the cities of Siena, Arezzo and Grossetto cities and represents one-third of the Tuscan population. The aim of the project is to gradually move to a digital environment by creating an integrated imaging management system through the implementation of RIS/PACS with web distribution. Desired outcome of the new environment will be reduced costs and improved workflow through the implementation of automated processes.
