The overall trend is “doing more with less.” Medical facilities are making purchasing decisions very carefully, whether they decide to delay purchase of the equipment or delay a tube change. Service dealers are therefore forced to look for the most economical alternatives.

Frick believes that the cost of materials is the biggest challenge facing the industry.
“The cost of technology in both image intensifiers and X-ray tubes is increasing,” he says. “At the same time, the market is demanding more competitive pricing.”

Still, despite the economy, flat panel technology is experiencing double-digit growth year-to-year and the OEMs seem to be moving in this direction.

For now, companies have their work cut out – producing X-ray tubes designed to optimize the efficiency inherent in digital imaging, tubes that manage heat better and those that will stand up to a shortened duty cycle.
