The Florida Legislature is considering legislation that would provide the certification of radiologist assistants (RA) through the existing state Department of Health's radiologic technologist program, reports the American College of Radiology.

Florida House Bill 819, sponsored by Rep. Michael Grant (R, Port Charlotte and Sarasota) and Senate Bill 1366, sponsored by Sen. Jeff Atwater (R, Palm Beach and Broward Counties), would establish that the specific duties of the RA be defined by the Department of Health but must be consistent with the guidelines developed by the ACR, American Society of Radiologic Technologists, and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Consistent with those guidelines, the proposed legislation specifically provides that the RA may not interpret images, make diagnoses, or prescribe medications or therapies. Both versions would require that the applicant for a radiologist assistant's certificate must demonstrate to the Department of Health that he or she holds a current certificate or registration as an RA from the ARRT.

The Florida Radiological Society has worked steadfastly in support of the legislation. They are one of many chapters that are currently working on the passage of legislation recognizing the radiologist assistant. Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Montana have passed laws on this issue. Currently there are seven programs offering either baccalaureate degrees or post-baccalaureate certificates as an RA. The ACR and ASRT passed a joint statement recognizing the development of the RA in 2003.
