Kodak Debuts New CR Software With Special Security Features That Aid Healthcare IT Staffs

AUSTIN, TX, April 27 -- Eastman Kodak Company announced a software upgrade for its KODAK DIRECTVIEW CR 800 and CR 900 Series Systems that contains enhanced security and other new features. The new software, and a portable long-length imaging system used in conjunction with Kodak's CR platform, will both be available this summer. Both systems were shown at the Society for Computer Applications in Radiology (SCAR) meeting.

Kodak's new CR software offers enhanced security and virus intrusion prevention through use of CISCO Security Agents (CSA). This proactive technology can intercept and block both known and unknown malicious software (malware) threats. It does so by intercepting and preventing abnormal behavior initiated by malware, prior to corruption of the platform or application. By providing a preventative shell for each device, CSA delivers added layers of protection against internal attacks or attacks that penetrate the healthcare organization's firewall.

CSA offers important advantages over anti-virus software, which can significantly degrade the performance of medical imaging systems and requires frequent updates. With CSA, any attempt to modify programs or applications is prevented so the need for continuous virus definition updates is greatly reduced. Security agents can provide temporary protection until operating system patches become available and can be installed.

"Integration of CSA with our medical image and information management systems represents a vital component of Kodak's security methodology," said Jess Edwards, Chief Privacy and Security Officer, Kodak's Health Group. "With this software, IT staffs have another vital layer of defense around their core systems and an attendant malware threat reduction. Our customers can continue to execute their enterprise policies knowing that their risk has been reduced. As a result, Kodak medical devices, and the clinical operations they support, can operate with greater speed and performance while the overall level of security is strengthened."

Enhanced Analysis, Automatic Imaging Orientation

The new CR software also enhances administrative analysis and reporting of all networked CR devices and offers automatic orientation of mammography images.

The software equips administrators to easily track the equipment, cassettes and radiographers associated with exam repeats and exposure variation within their department. With this detailed information, administrators can provide additional training for radiographers and order preventative maintenance or repairs to equipment and cassettes before performance degrades.
