Procedure room of MDI unit
"Is there any hospital that is not involved in a major building project right now?" asked Greg Mink, COO of
Modular Devices Incorporated (MDI) out of Carmel, Indiana. "That is the trend everywhere and it doesn't matter if you're large or small, everybody is growing."
The "pardon our appearance" signs are good signs for MDI, which provides mobile, modular, and pre-staged cardiac catheterization labs so that hospitals can remain operational during construction and expansion. "The terms `mobile' and `modular' are used interchangeably but the nice thing about the modular labs is that they are a little larger. Typically a modular lab will be part of a longer-term project--the hospital is building the new cardiac wing and during that time they'll use the modular lab."
If there's no exterior space for the mobile units, no problem. MDI also has fully digital, pre-staged labs that can be installed within the facility when the hospital requires a long-term lease solution and has available interior space. MDI's pre-staged cardiac cath lab is complete with hemodynamics and digital archiving (DICOM compatible). This option is especially popular where space is at a premium.

"Predominantly on the East coast, hospitals just don't have any room around the exterior of the building to [add] a mobile or modular unit," Mink said. "But occasionally they'll have a vacated area as services have moved elsewhere and we can come in and put a pre-staged lab in that space."
MDI is the brainchild of Greg's dad, President Bob Mink. "Back in the mid-`80s, we started the first mobile cardiac cath lab route here in central Indiana. It was much like an MRI or CT route with one location on Monday and on Tuesday it went to the next," Greg Mink said. "Word got out and people started asking us, can you just bring it to our hospital and park it for six months because we're renovating, expanding and our new building is three years away."
MDI has more than 30 units in operation with the business showing no signs of slowing. "It's certainly a very active segment of the market right now and it's a real pleasure to be able to meet this very visible need," he said. "It's not something where we have to go and convince people why they need us. It's pretty obvious."
