The country's leading hospital accreditation board announced more changes on the horizon for diagnostic imaging services.
The Joint Commission will require accredited hospitals, critical access hospitals and ambulatory health care organizations that provide diagnostic imaging services to adhere to new standards.
Areas addressed in the new and revised standards include minimum competency for radiology technologists, documentation of CT radiation dose in the patient's clinical record, management of safety risks in the MRI environment and more, according to the American Hospital Association.

The new standards go into effect July 1, 2014 with additional requirements to be phased in by 2015.
"With these updates, The Joint Commission's goal is to ensure that our imaging standards remain up-to-date and sufficiently address quality and safety," said Margaret VanAmringe, executive vice president of public policy and government relations at The Joint Commission.
