General Surgery
Our goal is to recruit individuals who are committed to excellence in patient care. The freestanding, fully accredited five-year general surgery program presently graduates four senior residents per year and prepares three additional first year residents for entry into medical and surgical subspecialties. There exists a tradition of excellence in the program that we are committed to perpetuating. Over the years, the residency program has consistently filled with excellent candidates. Graduates of the program have likewise established an outstanding record in passing the examinations of the American Board of Surgery and in going on to fellowship training.

The department of surgery educates junior and senior medical students from the University of Michigan Medical School on rotations throughout the year. Almost all the faculty surgeons hold teaching appointments at the University of Michigan School of Medicine; the Chair of the Department holds the rank of Professor of Surgery.

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital is also unique among community hospitals in the commitment of the faculty to the hospital and its programs. We provide general hospital care as well as specialized referral care to a large surrounding population base in Southeastern Michigan. Pertinent 2005 hospital data would include 9,902 surgical cases of which twenty-two percent where general surgical cases. The hospital received more than 85,908 emergency room visits in 2005. The institution is designated as an American College of Surgeon's level II trauma center.
