Dr. Auerbach's work gained national prominence in 1964, when his studies were cited in the first Surgeon General's report about the negative health consequences of smoking. In 1967, ACS also developed an educational program called "The Time to Stop is Now," based on the results of his studies to encourage people to quit smoking. One 1989 study found that Dr. Auerbach's work helped to save the lives of 750,000 people, who decided not to smoke after learning about the consequences of smoking from his experiments.
Dr. Auerbach received many accolades for his research accomplishments, including a special commendation from the Surgeon General, the Distinguished Service Award from ACS, and the Trudeau Medal from the American Lung Association.

And yet, his favorite award was known as the Golden Apple, an honor that medical students bestowed on their favorite professor. Dr. Auerbach served as the professor of pathology at the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey up until just two weeks before his death. He died at the age of 92 on January 15, 1997 in Livingston, New Jersey.
