VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwired - April 05, 2016) - Charles E. Ray Jr., M.D., Ph.D., FSIR, an interventional radiologist, and professor and head of the department of radiology at the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago, assumed the office of president of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) during the society's Annual Scientific Meeting in Vancouver. SIR is a national organization of more than 6,100 physicians and allied health professionals.
"Interventional radiology harnesses image-guided therapies to develop breakthrough treatments, change medical practice and improve the standard of care," said Ray. "As the specialty continues to grow, particularly with the advent of its own residency track, we must redouble our efforts as a society to recruit and develop the next generation of interventional radiologists with patients in mind."
A key leader within the Society of Interventional Radiology, Ray has been a member of SIR's Executive Council since 2007, serving as membership councilor from 2007-2011, treasurer from 2011-2014 and secretary from 2014-2015. He has also serves on the SIR Foundation board of directors and as features editor for SIR's Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.

Ray has written or contributed to 300 published scientific works and delivered nearly 200 invited lectures. His clinical practice and interests include arterial and venous thrombolysis, dialysis management, hepatobiliary intervention, interventional oncology, portal hypertension and uterine fibroids.
