Beyond the broadened reach provided by joining forces, the deal is expected to lead to $100 million of synergies both in cost-cutting and revenue enhancements due to cross-selling and portfolio enhancement in the three years post-merger.

Both firms have been in deal-making news lately. AmSurg had gone after TeamHealth Holdings with a $7.8 billion offer, which it withdrew in November after the latter's board “failed to engage in discussions,” according to The Street.

In 2014, AmSurg bought Sheridan Healthcare for $2.3 billion.

“AmSurg has been very consistent and vocal about their view that they want to get bigger,” Jefferies analyst Brian Tanquilut told Bloomberg. “They feel that there’s an advantage to having a pretty wide range of services that they offer.”

Envision, meanwhile, had been looking for another opportunity in the midst of its $120 million buy of Emergency Physicians Medical Group, according to The Deal.
