AAMI's new 2008
Electrical Safety
Manual.
The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) has revised one of its most popular guides to include updated standards and regulations critical to a clinical engineering department's implementation of an effective electrical safety program.
Revised and expanded for the first time in more than three years, the information found in the new 2008 Electrical Safety Manual is based on current laws and applicable safety standards.
Specific updates to the manual include:

* New recommendations based on ANSI/AAMI ES60601-1 and the latest editions of NFPA 70 and NFPA 99.
* Concise tables summarizing the key requirements of applicable standards for quick reference.
* Additional guidance regarding isolated power systems.
* New material regarding electromagnetic interference (EMI) and human factors engineering.
* New regulations from the Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies.
"One of the key benefits of the Electrical Safety Manual is that it pulls together critical information from numerous standards," says Matthew Baretich, PE, PhD, CCE, president of Baretich Engineering, Inc., and co-author of the manual.
"Clinical engineers, biomedical equipment technicians, and other healthcare technology managers have one single reference source for all the electrical safety information they need. This gives hospitals a chance to save money, as an alternative to buying numerous individual standards.
"In addition to incorporating the latest standards, our two primary objectives for this new edition were reformatting the information for easier reference and adding new material that moves beyond the traditional electrical safety issues, such as human factors engineering."
The manual also includes recommended safe practices for home-based devices brought into hospitals, information about incident investigations, and much more.
The Electrical Safety Manual is available in either print or CD. The print version includes a handy index, which enables you to quickly access and reference important information; while the CD version allows users to search by keyword and features bookmarks for easy navigation. In addition, the table of contents is hyperlinked to the corresponding section and pages.
Founded in 1967, AAMI is the world's leading organization dedicated to advancing the safe and effective development and use of medical technology. AAMI's annual conference attracts healthcare professionals from hospitals, universities, consulting firms, independent service organizations, and manufacturing companies around the world.
