GE Healthcare and Hologic Talk About Fan Beam Technology

by Barbara Kram, Editor | August 26, 2008
-Discovery C Fan beam bone densitometry unit is configured with IVA instant vertebral assessment (10-second single energy imaging of spine), express BMD (spine and hip scan 10 secs.), image pro-digital imaging processing, MXApro -- computer aided fracture assessment tool and electronic reporting. The "C" does not have supine lateral or whole body. This system is appropriate for mid- to large-sized facilities with a solid patient census.
-Discovery SL Fan beam bone densitometry unit is configured for supine lateral, IVA, forearm, dual hip, proximal femur and lumbar spine. The advanced SL configuration has a motorized rotating C-arm to perform lateral scanning with the patient lying in the supine position. This model does not have Whole Body. This system is appropriate for mid- to large-sized facilities with a solid patient census.

Benefits to Hospitals and Imaging Centers
-Discovery's OnePass single sweep scanning captures the hip and spine with a 10-second scanning time. No other system comes close to the combined speed and imaging resolution of Discovery, with better than 1.8 Lp/min, according to Hologic.

-Automatic hip positioning: Discovery's AccuView finds the bone edge for perfect positioning and automatically centers the hip the same way on follow-up exams for improved precision. AccuView helps eliminate common positioning errors, saving time and eliminating unnecessary rescanning.
-Superior visualization: Discovery's imaging technology provides superb image quality by eliminating the beam overlap errors and image distortion found in rectilinear systems. Hologic also incorporates fracture assessment tools, to quantify and display the degree of vertebral compression and help confirm the existence and severity of deformities.
-Consistency from exam to exam: Discovery performs continuous, automatic calibration, ensuring precise measurements results from exam to exam. You can also create and automate your preferred scan protocols to speed analysis and improve workflow.

On the Hologic Horizon
Coming down the road are three-dimensional (3-D) DXA scans taking advantage of the rotating C-arms found on some of the newer DXA systems. Recently, Hologic received FDA clearance to assess an important risk factor for heart attacks and stroke: abdominal aortic calcifications (AAC). Using the same scan used to identify vertebral fractures, the ability to assess the risk of two highly prevalent diseases, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease, greatly increases the economic utility of DXA systems.

DXA technology has advanced beyond BMD measurements. The new DXA devices could change the way doctors and scientists look at osteoporosis and how hospital administrators think about the utility of DXA devices.
