University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and GE HealthCare have launched a joint research initiative to advance imaging technologies and tackle pressing clinical challenges in brain health and cancer care.

Known as the Care Innovation Hub, the program combines UCSF’s clinical and research expertise with GE HealthCare’s technical capabilities to develop solutions aimed at improving diagnosis, treatment, and access to care.

There are three core areas of focus: enhancing medical imaging workflows, advancing brain health diagnostics, and expanding precision oncology approaches.

“This partnership with GE HealthCare brings a practical focus on addressing well-defined clinical objectives,” said Dr. Sharmila Majumdar, research vice chair in the UCSF Department of Radiology & Biomedical Imaging. “Together, we’re accelerating innovation in ways that will improve access to care and outcomes across healthcare settings.”

One key priority is the development of automated imaging workflows, including patient-specific MR techniques that adapt in real time. These advancements aim to improve efficiency, reduce inconsistencies, and enhance accessibility for personalized imaging services.

In brain health, the initiative seeks to deepen understanding of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. By leveraging advanced imaging techniques, researchers aim to explore the links between vascular disease, white matter injury, and brain aging, while also evaluating biomarkers to predict treatment outcomes.

In oncology, the collaboration will work to expand access to radiopharmaceutical therapies by standardizing imaging protocols and developing quantitative tools to monitor treatment responses. These efforts include novel approaches to visualize alpha-emitting radiopharmaceuticals and bring theranostics to more communities.

The Care Innovation Hub builds on decades of collaboration between UCSF and GE HealthCare, unifying their expertise in academic research and product development. Research activities for the initiative will be conducted at UCSF facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area.
