Heidelberg University Hospital has signed an agreement with Belgium-based IBA to install the ProteusONE, a compact proton therapy system, as part of an expansion to its particle therapy program.
The system will be installed on the hospital’s campus in Heidelberg, Germany. Treatment with the new equipment is expected to begin in the second half of 2030. The deal includes a multiyear operations and maintenance agreement, and IBA has already received the first payment. The typical cost for such a system, including maintenance, ranges between €35 million and €45 million.
UKHD’s particle therapy program has been operational since 2010 through its Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (HIT), one of the first hospital-based facilities in Europe to offer both proton and heavy ion therapy. The addition of ProteusONE marks a strategic step toward increasing access to precision radiation treatments for cancer patients.

“Integrating IBA’s state-of-the-art equipment into our program will enable us to stay up-to-date with the latest proton therapy technologies,” said professor Dr. med. Dr. rer. nat. Jürgen Debus, chairman of the board and chief medical director at Heidelberg University Hospital. “In particular, the ProteusONE system, with its optimized clinical workflow, will contribute to our objective to treat more patients with proton therapy.”
IBA, headquartered in Louvain-la-Neuve, specializes in particle accelerator technology and is one of the main suppliers of proton therapy systems worldwide.
“We are proud to sign a contract with such a renowned and experienced institution, which is a demonstration of our differentiation in the particle therapy field,” said Olivier Legrain, CEO of IBA. “We look forward to collaborating with Heidelberg University Hospital’s professional team over the coming years, for the benefits of patients across Germany.”
