Echolight to showcase ultrasound-based bone scanning at RSNA

Echolight will demonstrate its radiation-free bone densitometry technology at the upcoming Radiological Society of North America, highlighting its REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry) platform designed to assess bone health without X-ray exposure.

The Lecce, Italy-based company uses ultrasound to measure bone density and microarchitecture at key axial sites such as the spine and femur. Unlike conventional dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), REMS does not require ionizing radiation, enabling safer, repeatable scans across a broader patient population, including pregnant individuals and children.

Because the technology does not require a shielded room, Echolight says exams can be performed with greater flexibility in clinical settings. The system also incorporates automatic artifact exclusion for improved diagnostic reliability.

New research will be featured at RSNA, including two recently published studies validating REMS. The first outlines practice parameters for the technology, developed by an international panel of experts. “This important publication marks a pivotal moment for the clinical adoption of REMS technology worldwide,” said Mike Yuja, chief commercial officer at Echolight USA.

The second study explored REMS use in a cohort of 164 pregnant women, measuring femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) across all three trimesters. According to Yuja, “The findings revealed a significant reduction in BMD during the second and third trimesters,” with bone loss linked to lower levels of nutritional supplementation and higher gravidity.

Echolight’s system simultaneously measures BMD, T-scores, Z-scores, and a proprietary fragility score based on bone structure, designed to estimate five-year fracture risk through statistical and spectral analysis.

The company, which opened its U.S. operations in 2020, plans to provide additional study materials and demonstrations at Booth #3165 during the conference.
