Northwell Health has opened a new interventional radiology (IR) suite at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, part of a $6 million investment aimed at expanding imaging-guided cancer care and minimally invasive procedures.

The addition brings the New Hyde Park, New York-based hospital’s total to three IR suites, increasing capacity for procedures such as tumor ablation, biopsies, vascular interventions and catheter placements. Hospital leaders say the expanded infrastructure is intended to support more complex oncology cases and neurointerventional procedures.

At the center of the new suite is the Philips Azurion 7 image-guided therapy system, which uses multi-axis positioning and 3D imaging capabilities to assist clinicians during procedures. The system is designed to improve visualization of anatomy and enable more precise targeting, while also reducing radiation exposure compared to older technologies.

The suite spans approximately 1,100 square feet and includes upgraded recovery space, along with supporting IT and ancillary equipment. According to the health system, the technology will allow physicians to perform more advanced biopsies of difficult-to-reach lesions, potentially aiding earlier and more accurate cancer diagnosis.

“Long Island Jewish Medical Center has transformed itself into one of the nation’s leading cancer hospitals and this technology enhances the important work our physicians are doing,” said Lenny Nartowicz, president of LIJ and a Northwell senior vice president. “This advanced interventional radiology suite increases access to care and provides ever more precise targeting for a host of medical problems.”

Dr. Ross Wank, executive vice chair of radiology in Northwell’s central market, said the system improves image quality and procedural guidance while lowering radiation dose. “This is the next generation of interventional radiology, which translates into better image quality, more precise guidance, and, significantly for the patient, lower dose radiation,” he said.

Long Island Jewish Medical Center is a 583-bed tertiary care teaching hospital and part of Northwell’s broader oncology network, which treats more than 19,000 cancer cases annually.
