UW Health Kids has opened a dedicated pediatric interventional radiology suite at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, expanding capacity for minimally invasive procedures and research.
The new suite began seeing patients in June and is designed exclusively for pediatric interventional radiology, utilizing MR, ultrasound, fluoroscopy and CT to guide minimally invasive procedures.
According to Dr. Eric Monroe, pediatric interventional radiologist at UW Health Kids and professor of radiology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, the team treats patients with a range of conditions, including vascular disorders and cancer, performing procedures such as catheter placements and biopsies.

The suite includes GE HealthCare’s Allia Moveo image-guidance system, which features a ceiling-mounted C-arm that can be positioned around the patient and moved away when imaging is not needed. The setup is intended to improve flexibility during procedures and create a less confining environment for pediatric patients. The suite also incorporates 3D imaging and navigation technologies.
UW Health said the installation is the first pediatric interventional radiology implementation of the Allia Moveo system and the fourth clinical installation worldwide. In addition to patient care, the system will support research activities.
Monroe said the added capacity is expected to double the number of interventional radiology procedures performed annually at American Family Children’s Hospital. Annual procedure volume has already increased from about 300 in 2021 to roughly 800, but demand had exceeded available space, leading to delays and some patients seeking care elsewhere.
The new suite also frees space previously shared with pediatric interventional cardiology, increasing access for heart patients. In addition, hospital officials said shifting more minimally invasive procedures into the dedicated suite will increase operating room availability for cases that require a surgical setting.
