GE RSNA Roundup: Volumetric PET/CT Scan and Breast Imaging Advances

by Barbara Kram, Editor | November 28, 2005

Chicago, November 27, 2005 - GE Healthcare introduced today three new advanced imaging technologies across different modalities to enhance breast cancer detection:
-MR BREASE (breast spectroscopic examination), a new technique using spectroscopy to improve specificity; a new collaborative agreement with Johnson & Johnson's Ethicon
-Endo-surgery to integrate biopsy and portable ultrasound technologies; and
- a new digital mammography workflow module for GE's Centricity picture archiving communication system (PACS) system. These advances augment the world's leading digital mammography system, Senographe, which is on display this week at the 91st annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago.

Since Senographe's introduction as the world's first full-field digital mammography (FFDM) in 2000, more than 1,500 of the GE systems have been
installed worldwide, making it the number one selling digital mammography system in the world.

"GE is the choice of today and the partner of tomorrow for breakthrough advancements in breast imaging," said Folke Lindberg, general manager of global Mammography at GE Healthcare. "Our technologies meet all the clinical needs of screening and diagnostic procedures on one system to optimize workflow, enhancing clinicians' ability to diagnose and treat breast cancer."

GE is the only company with the most advanced imaging technologies across different modalities to enhance breast cancer screening and diagnosis.

"We're taking a holistic, multi-modality approach to breast cancer by looking at all of GE's capabilities and how they will impact the whole spectrum of the disease, from screening and early diagnosis through treatment," said April Dorcas, strategic marketing manager at GE Healthcare.

The Most Advanced Multi-Modality Technologies for Breast Care

Mammography
Introduced in early 2004, the Senographe DS was the first and only full-field digital mammography system designed to meet all clinical needs, from screening to diagnostic and interventional procedures, using the same detector to optimize image quality and workflow. Senographe DS and Seno Advantage multi-modality breast imaging
workstation are cornerstones of GE's digital mammography offering.

Tucson Breast Center completes 120 mammograms daily with GE's Senographe 2000D and Senographe 2000DS digital mammography systems, doubling the throughput of the three analog rooms the systems replaced in 2001.

"GE's digital mammography technology helps the center achieve high throughput and patient satisfaction," said director Lisa Labbe. "This reduces interruptions to radiologists while they are reading and decreases callbacks and wait time, allowing us to complete on average three mammograms every 10 minutes."
