Live RSNA 2005 Trade Show Report Straight From the Floor

by Robert Garment, Executive Editor | November 29, 2005
Day One: Sunday November 27 -- RSNA 2005 started fast and floor traffic was brisk and busy all day long. The Big OEMs of imaging are dominating the show, as expected with their massive, high-rise displays and equally impressive new imaging and software technologies displayed full-size on the floor.

RSNA 2005: an estimated 70,000 attendees

RSNA 2005 is truly a global medical event, as we met with healthcare professionals from all over the world. We would estimate that 35 to 40 percent of the attendees came in from over seas.

The latest imaging technology is high-speed, 3-D, and colorized -- with the hardware rivaling what you may remember from the Starship Enterprise.

But the biggest "buzz" at the Show was about Siemens dual source CT, the SOMATOM Definition. It's capable of imaging full cardiac detail with as much as 50 percent less radiation exposure compared to traditional CT. The company says it's "quicker than a heartbeat" -- meaning it can clearly capture an image of a beating heart. And we wonder what such a machine will go for used a few years down the road.

The other imaging OEMs also have impressive new equipment on display featuring 64-slice and the crowds around the booths were as dense as a subway or metro car during rush hour.

DOTmed has also seen heavy traffic at our booth, meeting a constant stream of people who, in just minutes, "get" the DOTmed concept of buying and selling used medical equipment person-to-person, and we expect hundreds of new registrants in a day or two. (We also met a head of radiology from Maryland who will be posting three MRIs for auction shortly.)

This report is being filed Wednesday afternoon, and our complete Show Wrap-Up will appear in next week's issue.

Don't miss it! Because it will also feature a photo gallery of over a dozen DOTmed "luminaries" we met at the Show.
