Various health care industry associations, including the American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association had both expressed strong support after the President signed the Senate bill into law last week. On Tuesday, comments from the insurance industry perspective were given, from America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP)-- a national association representing around 1,300 member companies providing health insurance coverage. Also on Tuesday AHIP President and CEO Karen Ignagni released a statement saying: "Ensuring that all Americans have access to coverage is a significant step forward for our country, but these reforms will only be sustainable if they are paired with real efforts to control costs...Ultimately, the success of health care reform will depend on whether or not soaring costs are brought under control and coverage becomes more affordable for working families and small businesses." Ignagni added that health plans have supported reforms that make pre-existing conditions a thing of the past, and that now health plans will focus on "minimizing disruption" to stakeholders as new persons are brought into the system.
