In an effort to continually educate health care providers and improve patient care, the American College of Radiology announced an update of its Appropriateness Criteria on Tuesday. More than 30 criteria have been updated, and the organization has added five new topics to the Appropriateness Criteria.
"What we're trying to do is provide health care professionals with the most up-to-date evidence in medical literature and to use the experts we have in order to provide additional guidance to improve the quality of patient care," says David Kurth, ACR's director of practice guidelines, technical standards and Appropriateness Criteria.
The criteria are used to help health care providers choose the most appropriate medical imaging exam for a patient's clinical condition, according to the organization.

This update is the first this year, says Kurth.
Five new topics have been added to the Interventional Radiology panel, Neurologic Imaging panel and Head and Neck panel.
ACR has also revamped its Anytime, Anywhere mobile application for smart phones, which allows subscribers to download content from the organization. The updated content will be added to the app within the next couple of months, says Kurth.
