Best of RSNA 2010: Siemens' integrated whole-body PET/MR, movie-magic meets medicine, and microwaves silence radio waves

by Sean Ruck, Contributing Editor | December 07, 2010

"Seeing the ultrasound image in true 3-D gives the clinician another tool to use when speaking with a parent," says Barbara Del Prince, OB/GYN segment marketing manager for ultrasound. "The technology could prove especially useful if a medical issue affecting the fetus needs to be discussed."

The equipment utilizes an Nvidia graphics card and 3-D technology and is currently awaiting FDA clearance.

From a movie and medical match-up to a direct pairing of medical modalities, Siemens introduced another innovative leap already available in Europe and currently pending FDA clearance for sale in the United States. The Biograph mMR system is the world's first-ever simultaneous PET/MR system. The merger of the modalities offers some good news for space-starved facilities since the one machine requires a much smaller footprint.

The creation of the hybrid system took about five years of planning and development. It required building a new detector and new coils. The 3-Tesla machine houses the MR and PET around a 60-centimeter bore and already is in use at the Munich Technical University, Germany. "This isn't just a PET and an MR linked," observed Chad DeGraaff, national manager for SPECT & SPECT/CT. "This is a total integration of the two modalities."

Carestream Health: Meaningful use upgrades, dose tracking and PACS solutions

Carestream's overall theme for this year's show was "A Smarter Way Forward." The theme was demonstrated through a variety of the company's software upgrades and new offerings.

Acknowledging meaningful use guidelines, the company's radiology information system currently has about one-quarter of the required profiles supported, with more on the way. Meanwhile, its new Critical Results Package creates a system where radiologists acknowledge reception of reports and actions taken in order to help improve workflow and patient care.

Conscious of and proactive about dose reduction, the company also has tooled their software offerings to track total radiation dosage a patient has received from all exams across all modalities. It's hoped this increased level of vigilance will provide valuable data and feedback regarding radiation dosage and the information will also assist radiologists in decisions regarding exams.
