Of course, PACS is still showing up large on CareStream's radar and their Super PACS system may be a game-changer. "Super PACS is an auxiliary to PACS," explains Ulf Andersson, a marketing director for northern Europe. "It overlays legacy systems to incorporate them into one vendor-neutral archive." Ultimately, this means existing PACS systems don't need to all be switched out at a facility or group of facilities. This could be especially attractive to hospitals absorbing other practices.

Canon rounds out the big-booth offerings for Lakeside Center. The main reveal at its booth was the new RadPRO D2RS Dynamic/Static Imaging System.
Canon's D2RS

The system is outfitted with Canon's CXDI-50RF DR and provides remote-controlled fluoroscopy and radiography imaging capabilities. The ability for the RadPRO D2RS to change position from horizontal to vertical provides clinicians different points of view and also helps gravity assist with the dissemination of contrast agents.

Microsulis: Microwave ablation
Microsulis' technology push may make some waves in the future. The company was at the show to promote their Accu2i percutaneous microwave tissue ablation (pMTA) system. "I believe microwave ablation is likely to replace [radiofrequency ablation]. With microwave, there's a 6 percent to 8 percent recurrence rate while RFA is 20 percent to 40 percent," said company CEO Stuart McIntyre.

The system recently received FDA approval. Currently, the company has installs in 45 sites with two in the United States, and the first procedure in the U.S. performed last week. Microsulis is averaging four to five installs per month and has the production capabilities to build about 12 machines per month.
