Philips Demonstrates New Ultrasound Systems

by Barbara Kram, Editor | May 22, 2006
Andover, Mass. - Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) highlighted its new HD 3 and HD11 XE ultrasound systems and previewing iSLICE at the recent American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists meeting in Washington, D.C. The new systems bring advanced imaging capabilities to smaller Ob-Gyn practices and clinics while iSLICE uses volumetric imaging to facilitate the selection and sharing of ultrasound images.

The new Philips HD 3 is the company's first compact ultrasound system since the introduction of the Ultramark 4 that became the standard for many Ob-Gyn practices. The HD3 features high definition digital imaging with optional color Doppler and freehand 3D imaging. Its compact profile and simple operation makes it an ideal system for small to mid-sized practices, while its affordability makes it ideal for physicians focusing on under-served populations.

STIC technology is now available on the new HD11 XE. STIC (Spatio-Temporal Image Correlation) allows the physician to view the rapidly beating fetal heart from multiple angles in three dimensions to assess cardiac structure. The advanced ergonomic design of the HD11 XE also helps alleviate many of the stresses that lead to workplace injuries among sonographers.

Philips also previewed iSLICE image review that will soon be available as part of the QLAB quantification software package. iSLICE uses volumetric imaging technology to quickly display multiple images from one sweep. These precise multi-slice views allow the sonographer to quickly choose the best images for physician analysis. No longer do sonographers have to hope they captured the best possible image. They can review the volumetric data in incremental steps, with full rotation, in a similar fashion to MRI and CT, and choose the most appropriate 2D views.

"These new systems and technologies are just first steps in our total commitment to advance the next generation of diagnostic capabilities for the Ob-Gyn and to foster improved patient management, both here in the U.S. and around the world," said Victor Reddick, senior vice president global marketing, ultrasound, for Philips Medical Systems.

Also featured were the latest enhancements to the iU22 intelligent ultrasound system. The iU22 includes new fourth-generation 3D/4D imaging and the most advanced 2D image clarity required for perinatology and women's health applications.
